September-Norwegian Delegation to India Clean Seas-Goa


The India Clean Seas Conference took place in Goa, India (22-24 September), and discussed initiatives to preserve the clean waters, knowing over 70% of the world being covered by global oceans. In September 2015 the United Nations 193 Members States unanimously adopted the 2030 agenda for sustainable development, including converging agendas for sustainable marine environment.

The Norwegian Business Association, India along with Innovation Norway and the Royal Norwegian Consulate General, Mumbai mobilised a delegation of 5 Norwegian Companies to support the objectives and aims of the conference to keep oceans clean. Representing companies compromised of Kongsberg India, Jotun India, Goltens, Water Mist and Wallem Ship Management all being major players in the field of Maritime showed up to support and adopt measures towards a sustainable marine environment.

The Guest of Honour, Mr. Tor Dahlstrom, Consul-Deputy Head of the Mission, Royal Norwegian Consulate, Mumbai addressed the conference. He highlighted Norway’s contribution to the cause of sustainability & environmental issues. Also, he underlined the contribution of Norwegian companies in the prevention and sustenance for a healthy and safe marine ecosystem. He spoke of the advanced measures adopted by Norway in this field like ratification of the Hong Kong Convention on the Safe & Environment friendly Recycling of Ships and its readiness to impart the practices across the globe. He discussed about the Versova Beach clean Up in Mumbai .

The conference communicated immense information on sustainable marine environment as the theme of the event. Seminars and panel discussions were organized with focus on subjects of Ocean dumping of wastes and its treatment, Deep Sea Mining and environmental impacts, hazardous waste management, safe and environmental friendly ship recycling including aspects like green shipping, ballast water management-its treatment and challenges, reduction of GHG emission from ships and LNG as fuel for the future and conservation of coastal habitats.The conference was an excellent platform for Norwegian companies to share their expertise with important stakeholders in India and get an overview of the developments for the creation of Clean Seas.
